I’m back!

That’s right, I’m back online, blogging away with my new PC, I’ve been busy gaming like crazy, playing a lot of far cry 3, Skyrim etc, currently I’m hanging out for bioshock infinite and tomb raider, just need to save some cash.

Friday

One of the greatest low budget films of the 1990s would have to be Friday, starring Ice Cube and Chris Tucker. Set in south central LA this hilarious comedy shows a day in the life of two friends, Craig and Smokey and the events that unfold over the course of one day. Central to the story is an unfortunate loss of work, the smoking of a lot of weed and an angry drug dealer who wants his money. Craig and smokey have until 10pm to come up with the money or they’re dead as disco. It’s a classic, find it, you won’t be disappointed.

Greece’s debt

The word crisis is being bandied about a bit too readily however the situation in Greece should be a concern to the rest of the world.  Already the national debt of most of the west is spiraling out of control the IMF shows the US national debt is presently 84.26 % of it’s GDP, compared to Australia where the debt to GDP percentage is 17.63 % or Greece where the rate is 115.16 % you start to see a picture of the hard times the country has fallen on.  IMF Figures show that Greece has lost 25 % of it’s competitiveness since joining the EU and adopting the Euro as it’s currency. At the end of 2009, the general public deficit reached 13.6 percent of GDP and public debt had increased to 115 percent of GDP. Even with the lower deficits envisaged under the program, the debt as share of GDP will continue to peak at almost 150 percent of GDP in 2013 before declining thereafter.

In past years, Greece’s public sector spending grew, while revenue fell. Then the global recession hit and economic activity slowed and unemployment rose. This exacerbated the fiscal situation.

Financing costs for Greece rose rapidly, adding to the already high debt burden. To stop these snowballing dynamics, the Greek government realized that a strong economic program was the only viable option.

To combat this pubic salaries are being reduced, the retirement age is being raised.  Europe is helping, the last stimulus measures have resulted in another 109 billion euros being loaned to bolster the economy and with the austerity measures in place the country looks well placed to repay it’s foreign debt in the future.

This is a wonderful way to help the citizens of Christchurch in this terrible time.

98 People are now estimated to have perished in this latest disaster, 226 people are still unaccounted for and search and rescue teams from new around New Zealand and Australia and working around the clock to rescue those still trapped in damaged buildings

The 6.3 quake devastated and already fragile and damaged city, with aftershocks still occurring nerves are frayed and the news coming out of Christchurch is not good.  The number of deaths is expected to rise and our hearts go out to all those families who have lost their loved ones.

There have been 30+ aftershocks since measuring approximately 3-4 on the Richter scale further weakening structures.  People wanting to help search and rescue personnel are being turned away for their own safety.  The rescue and recovery effort will take more time yet and people are being urged to be patient.  There have been no rescues today and it is reported hopes are fading.

Over 5,000 aftershocks have been felt by residents since the quake in September 2010 which measured 7.1 on the Richter scale.

Information on the Richter scale can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_magnitude_scale

Cheer up, you’ll soon be dead…

A great man once said that to me and it looks as though he may be right…. According to recent articles we may be due for another mass extinction and I’m not talking about the lunatics in half of America’s cults.  It looks as though a rather aptly named asteroid, Apophis may be on a collision course with Earth.  For more information check out this link.

In ancient Egyptian Apophis is a serpent who battles with the sun god Ra every night.  Each dawn Ra emerges victorious from his battles with Apophis in the underworld.  Apophis’s aim was to swallow the sun thereby destroying the world and undoing all creation.
